This tiny little treasure was found at the Whistle Post antique shop in Merrickville, Ontario. Ever on the lookout for lovely antique jewelry, my heart skipped a beat when I spied this ring tucked inside its tiny oval ring box, because to find a 130 year old ring still in the original box is a rare and wonderful thing?

It dates to the 1890s or so and isn't marked but was made from solid 10k rose gold, tested and guaranteed. Originally a child's ring, it weighs.

7 grams and fits a US ring size 2 1/4, a dainty delicate size that is lovely to wear as a pinky or midi ring. It has split/forked shoulders embellished with two little hearts and a low-profile navette shaped face set with two freshwater seed pearls and four tiny garnets, each measuring approximately 1mm diameter. Even though I collect antique jewelry boxes, I don't have the heart to separate these two after all these years, so the ring will come with its little antique ring box (which is the original box according to the proprietor of the store).

The underside of the lid is gold-stamped with the retailer's name, C. Redfern, a rather famous person in Victoria history.

Charles Edward Redfern was born in London and apprenticed with his father, a watchmaker, before moving to Canada in 1862. He initially set out to make his fortune as a gold miner but instead opened up a jewelry business, later serving two terms as mayor of Victoria, B.

The ring and box are both in good condition with little signs of wear commensurate with age, including some rubwear on the leather and a whitish mark behind the silk lining of the lid. The lid is a bit offset, and the hinge and latch both work perfectly fine. On the ring, the back of the shank has a resizing mark, and the face sits at a bit of a slant, as shown in picture 7.

This may have been an intentional part of the design because it helps keep the navette point from poking into your skin, making the ring more comfortable to wear. There is also some residue around the stones, visible under magnification but not to the naked eye. It is a lovely dainty piece, but I do think it looks larger in the photos because of the very close view, so please be sure to check the measurements?
